POSITION PAPER

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) has been adopted as the first of six General Assembly committees because of its essential role in maintaining international peace and security. All member states of the United Nations are welcome in the Committee to discuss measures to further strengthen stability through lower levels of armaments. More so than ever, DISEC faces many challenges that come along with increased technology, weaponry and information in the 21st century. Working closely with the United Nations Disarmament Commission and the Geneva-based Conference of Disarmament after 60 different annual sessions, DISEC has sent ideas and recommendations to the Security Council ranging in issue from the problems raised by the discovery of atomic energy to issues regarding the usage of chemical weapons in Syria. Through these resolutions, “The First Committee” fights global threats to peace that affect the international community.
