The Organization of American States (OAS) was created on April 30, 1948, with the purpose of promoting cooperation, democracy, security, and development across the Americas. The Organization of American States is made up of 34 independent countries from North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, which work together to address regional challenges and strengthen collaboration between nations. Apart from strengthening democratic governance and cooperation among the states of the Americas, the Organization of American States tackles issues such as the protection of human rights, regional security, electoral integrity, and social and economic development. The common goal of the participating nations is to find solutions to these issues presented whilst maintaining stability, democracy, and cooperation throughout the region. The Organization of American States follows the principles outlined in the Charter of the Organization of American States, believing that democracy, respect for sovereignty, and regional cooperation are essential for peace and development in the Americas.
