The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) initially established in 1997 was created with the purpose of contributing to the achievement of global peace. The committee acts primarily in 5 major areas which are tackling corruption, establishing criminal justice systems, approaching the world drug problem, countering terrorism, and strengthening bonds to face transnational organized crime. Major issues such as these require a transnational approach including the establishment of a broad network of programmes which is what the UN has focused on creating. With the assistance of both governmental and non-governmental organizations from over 150 countries operating in around 20 field offices, UNODC combats security threats to promote sustainable peace and strengthen protection against both crime and illicit drug problems.
